MintsheketoOral tradition
Tsonga stories are told, not written. The telling is a performance with its own opening ritual, and the audience has a part in it.
Garingani wa Garingani
The teller opens with the call Garingani wa Garingani!, meaning "I am the narrator, daughter of the narrator", and the audience answers between episodes. Beloved cycles include the trickster tales of N'wampfundla, the hare, who wins by wit what he cannot win by strength.
An honest note
A "Tsonga creation myth" previously published on this site mixed figures from neighbouring cultures: Mwari is the Shona supreme being, and Modjadji is the Balobedu Rain Queen. Neither is Tsonga, so the passage was removed rather than patched.
We would rather publish three verified stories than thirty borrowed ones. If you grew up with a Tsonga story, share it with us and we will credit you.
